Yueqing Lanterns of Zhejiang

Dragon leads, tricks unfold --lively tales in lights and gold.

🏮Introduction

Yueqing’s Dragon Boat Lantern: a floating sculpture that’s been glowing for 400 years! Shaped like a dragon boat, stacked with little houses and towers, all dressed up in colorful paper flowers. Wood, paint, paper cutting— every piece is handmade. Inside? Tiny opera heroes and farmers working in the fields — it’s like a whole village on a boat! On Lantern Festival, they pull it through the streets to share good-luck wishes. Then — poof! They light it up one last time and send the dragon flying to the sky, so the wishes reach the clouds!

📍Stories

A long time ago in the Ming dynasty, people in Yueqing villages made a special “Dragon Boat Lantern.” They built it with a dragon’s head and tail, and wooden boards for the body. With drums and gongs, the lantern paraded through the streets—like the very first baby dragon decoration!

The ornamental dragon stretched nearly five meters long and three meters high, rising in four tiers of pavilions. Inside, almost 300 tiny figures brought to life more than 80 plays, from Investiture of the Gods to Journey to the West. With a pull of the mechanism, the little figures could grind tofu, forge iron, or spin thread—moving so vividly that the dragon seemed to breathe with stories.

Every Lantern Festival, villagers carry the ornamental dragon through the streets in a grand parade of blessings. At the end, they bring it to the temple and set it aflame—sending the dragon to the heavens. In this fiery farewell, they pray for gentle winds, timely rains, and bountiful harvests.

Since the Guangxu reign of the Qing dynasty, the Lin family of Yueqing has passed down the craft of the ornamental dragon from generation to generation. Even in the 20th century, when artisans grew scarce, the Lin family held fast to tradition, ensuring that the dragon lantern art continued to live on through each successor.

Grandpa Lin Shunkui, who is really good at making dragon lanterns, built a super special ornamental dragon. It has 310 tiny people inside, and guess what—290 of them can actually move! Some wave, some work, some play. Now this magical dragon lives in the Zhejiang Intangible Heritage Museum, where it’s the superstar everyone loves to see.
