Lantern Signboard
A long time ago (maybe in the Qing dynasty), shopkeepers in Huangyuan wanted more customers. So they invented “lantern-box ads”! In the daytime, they looked plain, but at night—wow! The brightest signs in town. Everyone got excited and made bigger and bigger lanterns, until the whole street was glowing. In the end, it turned into a giant “lantern art show,” with lights shining everywhere!
Glowing Tales
Don’t underestimate these lanterns—they’re not empty inside! On their glowing faces, you could see heroes from the Three Kingdoms, tales of loyalty and family, and even mountains, rivers, flowers, and birds. It was like an ancient “glow-in-the-dark comic book.” Walking down the street, lanterns sparkled above your head, and stories floated before your eyes—it was even more exciting than watching short videos!
Huangyuan Never Sleeps
Every Lantern Festival, the streets of Huangyuan shine bright, just like an ancient Disney night parade! People line up, lanterns hang in rows, and when the drums begin to boom, the whole town bursts into joy. You might think it’s just a holiday, but really, it’s Huangyuan’s “light-and-shadow social party,” where everyone meets under the glowing lanterns.
Glow Lives On
Lanterns in Huangyuan also had a tough time. In 1958, the lantern frames were taken down, and the craft almost stopped. Luckily, a group of super-skilled makers saved it! In 1992, they rebuilt 70 lanterns and lit up the town again. Now, it’s not only a heritage treasure but also Huangyuan’s “king of culture flow,” shining brighter than ever!
Lantern Heritage Certificate
In 2006, the lanterns of Huangyuan got a super special honor—they were listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage! These weren’t just ordinary lanterns, they had their own “ID cards” and could proudly say: “I’m not only bright, I’m full of culture too!” It was like the lanterns officially “debuted,” becoming stars that represent Huangyuan.
